Stevonnie

Ahoy! Welcome aboard to Let the Ship Sail! This is your captain Loveseeker speaking! Our destination this time around is a little town called Beach City, the home of one of the most promising young couples to date. Steven Universe and Connie Maheswaran from the hit animated series Steven Universe.

Steven is a half-human half-alien boy with magical powers. He's upbeat and loves to have fun and make friends. Connie is a shy bookworm who is new to Beach City and not nearly as good at making friends. When the two of them first meet, Steven tries to impress Connie by showing off his bike, but then they end up getting trapped in a giant bubble together. At first, Connie doesn't know what to make of Steven or his powers, but the more time they spend together, the more she starts to love it.

Over the course of the series, Steven and Connie have become best friends. They've been through so much together in the short time that they've known each other. They even learned how to fuse together into single being named Stevonnie.

One of my favorite episodes that centers on Steven and Connie together is "Sworn to the Sword." Connie decides she wants to learn sword-fighting from Pearl so she can help the Crystal Gems defend the Earth. As she learns, she becomes convinced that her life is worthless compared to Steven's and that her only purpose is to serve and protect him, even at the cost of her own life. Of course, this doesn't sit well with old Stevie, so he has to snap her out of it by showing her that her life is just as important as his. He helps her realize that they're stronger when they fight together as equals and defend one another.

Ever since then, Steven and Connie have become quite the formidable team. But even when they're not training or fighting, they still find time to have fun together and enjoy the things they love. The episode "Steven's Birthday" is one of they're sweetest and most amusing episodes. Concerned with the fact that he doesn't seem to be aging much physically, Steven wants so much to be mature enough for Connie that he spends the whole day magically stretching out his body to make himself look older. Doing it for too long puts too much of a strain on his body and eventually it turns him into a baby.

Even the Gems don't know how to fix it, so it's possible that Steven could remain a baby permanently. But that doesn't matter to Connie. She promises to stick with Steven no matter how old he looks. Having his confidence restored allows Steven to return to his proper age. Aside from all that, though, this episode also has one of Steven and Connie's sweetest and most tender moments when they have a slow dance together.

I could go on and on all day about instances where Connie and Steven have made a perfect team and helped each other overcome their fears and insecurities. One of the shows key ideals is that people are stronger and better overall when they support and care for each other. These two are definitely living proof of that.

That's all for now, loyal voyagers! Thanks for setting sail with me again. Be sure to come back next week for another romantic excursion. Until then, this is Captain Loveseeker saying… Let The Ship Sail!
