Saluna

Ahoy! Welcome to Let The Ship Sail! This is your captain Loveseeker speaking! In honor of a recently released episode, I've decided to return to The Loud House for a look at another favorite ship from that series. The pairing of characters Luna Loud and Sam Sharp, also known as Saluna.

Luna Loud is the third oldest sibling of the Loud family and an up-and-coming rockstar. She's a master of multiple different instruments and her biggest idol is rock legend Mick Jagger Swagger. Luna's energy, passion and explosive personality easily make her the loudest of all.

Sam is Luna's friend and band mate, but until two years ago, no one had ever even heard of her. It all started with the episode "L is for Love," where the Loud siblings find a love letter in the mailbox addressed to a one L. Loud, which could be any of them. In order to find out who the letter is really for, they each send signals and tokens of affection to their respective crushes. Except for Luna, who's too shy to approach her crush Sam.

Throughout the episode, the audience is expected to believe that Sam is this guy that Luna is seen hanging out with a lot. But by the end, when she finally gets up the nerve to send Sam a love letter of her own, Sam turns out to be this girl who was always right behind the guy.

The revelation that Luna, one of the central characters and a fan favorite of the show, had a crush on a girl caused a huge explosion in the fandom. People were so excited that she was a member of the LGBT+ community, myself included. For a while, it was all I could think about and I couldn't wait for Sam to make another appearance so I could find out what happened after the letter. Unfortunately, it took several episodes for her to even make another cameo in the actual show. She appeared alongside Luna in the episode "Friendzy" when Luna invited her over to the house as an excuse to get special privileges from her parents, but she didn't have any lines of her own.

Thankfully, The Loud House also has a series of comic books that each contain an anthology of short stories. In the third issue, Live Life Loud, there's a story in which Luna accidentally misplaces Sam's guitar pick and she and the rest of her siblings scramble to find it before she finds out. The fact that the two of them had gotten really close and were hanging out together in comic form was a good start, but Saluna fans were still hungry for more.

There was another segment in the fifth issue, After Dark, where Luna is writing a song in the middle of the night and calls Sam up for help with the lyrics. It's pretty clear that the song is meant to be about Sam, which is probably partly why Luna was so hesitant to call her. It was nice for a brief interaction between them.

But now, after almost two years of anticipation, The Loud House has finally released an official episode dedicated to everyone's favorite cartoon lesbian couple entitled "Racing Hearts." The episode stars Luna and Sam participating in a town scavenger hunt. They're both excited to spend the whole day together and learn about each other along the way. What they learn, however, is that they apparently have a lot less in common than they thought. After several botched attempts to embrace each others' favorite things, they start to wonder if maybe they're just not meant to be together. They reluctantly decide to finish the hunt as friends

Their last challenge together is to bake an apple pie. It turns out that baking is something that neither of them are very good at. The two of them share a laugh at their failure and realize that maybe they don't need to have everything in common and that they should try and find new things to enjoy together. I like how it shows that good relationships take time to develop and there's no need to rush it.

I love how the story shows just how much Luna and Sam really care about each other. They really try to give each others' favorite things a fair shot, even if it doesn't work out. And they're both equally disappointed when they think there's no hope for them as a couple.

When The Loud House first started, I wouldn't have expected it to have the guts to make one of its lead characters queer, but I am SO glad they did. Giving Luna a love interest like Sam gave the fans a whole new reason to be excited. Luna and Sam make an absolutely adorable couple and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them. Rock on, soul sisters!
