Sparity

Ahoy! Welcome to Let the Ship Sail! This is your captain Loveseeker speaking. Today our vessel is docking in the magical land of Equestria to look in on a certain couple that proves that love really does have the power to transcend species. I'm speaking of course about the beautiful pairing of Rarity and Spike from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Rarity is a unicorn with an eye for detail and a passion for making things beautiful. She's the owner of her very own fashion line and her own line of clothing stores. And as the official Element of Generosity, she never misses a chance to give a present or do something kind for anyone in need. Spike is the loyal life-long assistant of the main character, Twilight Sparkle. He's a young dragon with a good heart who is always willing to help out whenever he's needed.

When Spike first comes to Ponyville and meets Rarity for the first time, he is immediately smitten and over the course of the series, that crush has persisted. Even though he enjoys being helpful to anyone, there's no one he loves helping more than Rarity. Although, she has been known to take advantage of his generosity from time to time. She knows about his feelings for her (not that he hides it very well) and has even gone so far as to exploit them now and then, like getting him to carry giant piles of luggage for her or manipulating him into giving up a gemstone that he's been waiting to eat for months.

While this does sour the relationship a little bit, it doesn't change the fact that Spike and Rarity both care deeply about each other. Even though she probably sees him as a sweet little helper most of the time. It's unclear exactly how much older Rarity is than Spike, but it is possible to draw an educated guess from context clues. Personally, I choose to believe that while Spike may physically be a kid by dragon standards, he would practically be a teenager in pony years.

I think what makes Sparity stand out from other potential ships where a younger boy likes an older girl is that Spike doesn't get nearly as creepy about his crush as others do. In similar cases, the boy tends to get way too persistent, with excessive, sometimes aggressive flirting and sometimes going out of his way to sabotage his crush's chances of dating anyone else. This of course usually leads to the girl getting creeped out, annoyed and angry at the boy, wishing that he would just leave her alone. With Sparity, there's none of that. Spike knows how to respect his crush enough not to pester her every time he sees her.

That's not to say he won't go out of his way to try and impress her by doing something special. In the holiday special "The Best Gift Ever," Spike tries to trade Secret Santa's with whoever has Rarity's name so he can give her something she'll really love. His present to her turns out to be a song about how he feels like he failed to giver her the perfect gift, but she is so deeply touched by his gesture that she tells him his present is perfect after all.

It's a beautiful moment that makes my heart burst every time. The love that these two have for each other may not have exactly the same form between them yet, but I for one am still keeping up hope that one day, when they're both around the same age range, that will change and they'll be able to call themselves an official couple.

That's all for now, folks! Thanks for setting sail with me today! Don't forget to join me again next time and until then... Let The Ship Sail!
